- Smoke-Free Legislation and the Social Climate of Secondhand Smoke in Mississippi, July 2009 Update (PDF 237KB) The California EPA Air Resources Board recently declared secondhand smoke to be a toxic air contaminant, putting this byproduct of cigarette smoking in the same category as diesel exhaust, and arsenic. Secondhand smoke contains more than 4,000 chemical compounds. At least 43 of these compounds have been demonstrated to cause cancer in humans and animals (Brownson, Eriksen, Davis, & Warner, 1997).
